Sharks Rally Falls Just Short

Wilmington, North Carolina-Hunter Shepherd hit a two-out RBI double to give the Morehead City Marlins a 6-5 lead in the top of the ninth inning over the Wilmington Sharks.  The Sharks put a runner on in scoring position in the bottom of the inning but were unable to score him in the 6-5 setback Saturday night at Buck Hardee Field.  The loss dropped the Sharks to 5-9 on the season and 0-4 in the season series with the Marlins.

With two outs and nobody on in the top of the ninth, Dusty Baker was hit by the pitch and Jack Harris drew a walk to set up Shepherd's winning hit.

The Sharks trailed 5-2 going into the bottom of the eighth.  Zachary Bridges reached second on a two-base throwing error by Marlins shortstop Jace Mercer to lead off the inning.  Cam Jenson singled him home to trim the deficit to 5-3.  Cory Everett then entered the game as a pinch hitter and hit a dramatic two-run home run to tie the game at five.

With the game tied at two in the top of the fifth, Mercer reached to lead off the inning on a fielding error by Sharks third baseman by Clemente Inclan.  Dusty Baker advanced him to second with a bunt single.  Harris then singled home Mercer to give the Marlins the 3-2 lead.  Baker advanced to third on a sacrifice fly by Shepherd.  He then came in to score on another sac fly by Colby Johnson to make it 4-2.

The Marlins added another run in the seventh on a double by Harris to go up 5-2.  The Sharks got on the board first in the second inning when CJ Conrad hit a double to score James Parker, who had reached on an error and then stole second.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Inclan hit a triple to lead off the inning.  Chad Fairey then hit an RBI groundout to score Inclan and tie the game at two.

The Sharks will be back in action Sunday night against the Holly Springs Salamanders at Ting Stadium in Holly Springs.  Ethan Meece (0-0, 5.40) will start on the mound for the Sharks.  First pitch is scheduled for 5:40PM.
